A CONCEPT-BASED APPROACH TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR the future
The ReNEW curriculum was developed to ensure that Wyoming nurses graduate with the knowledge and competencies needed to advocate for and deliver quality patient-centered care in a dynamic health care environment. Development of the curriculum was guided by the ReNEW mission, vision, and guiding principles.
Curriculum Overview
Six core curricular concepts form ReNEW’s organizing framework are woven throughout each course.

The ReNEW curriculum includes eleven End of Program Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). A SLO identifies the expectations of each student who successfully completes the baccalaureate curriculum.
Each program’s SLO is linked to one of the six core curricular concepts. For students who begin their program at a participating Wyoming community college, the curriculum includes eleven ADN Benchmark SLOs that identify the expectations of each ADN student who successfully completes the first five semesters of the ReNEW curriculum. Each ADN Benchmark SLO is linked to one of the six core curricular concepts.
CONCEPT-BASED
It is becoming impossible to revise content-based health care curricula in response to the growing complexity of health care delivery. The ReNEW curriculum uses a concept-based learning approach designed to prepare nurses with enhanced clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills needed to quickly adapt and respond to the constant changes in health care. As healthcare practices evolve, graduates from the ReNEW curriculum will have the capacity to deliver competent care based on a deep understanding of core foundational concepts and contemporary information
PREREQUISITE COURSES
All participating schools have the following prerequisite courses for ReNEW:
- English 1010 – Composition
- Math 1400 – College Algebra
- Biology (or Life) 1010 – General Biology
- Anatomy or A & P I (Anatomy & Physiology I)
- Individual programs may have other prerequisites
Students should visit with an advisor at the college they plan to attend for specific information about prerequisite courses.
RESOURCES
PRECEPTOR MODULES
Preceptor Modules have been created for preceptors at any educational program or clinical site in Wyoming. Preceptors are typically identified by the clinical facility and approved by the individual nursing program. Preceptors will experience a learning curve when precepting using a concept-based learning approach, or when precepting students who graduated from the ReNEW curriculum that is based on concept-based learning.
NURSING EDUCATION SUMMIT
The Nursing Education Summit is held annually in May. This is a wonderful opportunity for all nurses and other interested persons to gather together to not only learn but to revolutionize nursing education.
CLINICAL EDUCATION TOOLKITS
Each Concept-Based Learning Clinical Activity Toolkit (CBLA) is a compilation of information, resources, activities or tools that can be used by faculty in any nursing program or clinical practice partner in Wyoming to implement concept-based learning activities during clinical course rotations or other clinically-related situations. Toolkits need to be standardized in appearance and contain language that is easily understandable to faculty and professionals in clinical practice. The toolkit should contain all the necessary information such that the user who reviews the Toolkit can easily replicate the clinical activity without questions (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2013). One CBLA equals one CBLA Toolkit.
